Being pregnant is hard, not to mention energy consuming. When you’re expecting, you’ll realise that sleep doesn’t come easy as two of the most common sleeping positions – back and stomach – are major no-nos.

According to experts, pregnant women should avoid sleeping on their backs during the second and third trimesters. In this position, the weight of your uterus presses on your spine, back muscles, and major blood vessels, which can decrease blood flow around your body and to your baby. On top of that, it can cause muscle aches and pains, hemorrhoids, swelling, as well as low blood pressure.

And as sleeping on your stomach, you’ll have to switch once your belly is the size of a huge melon.

So what’s the best sleeping position for expecting mothers?

Well, the American Pregnancy Association says the best way to sleep on is to sleep on your left side. The organization explains that sleeping on your left side while pregnant will help pump more nutrients and blood to your placenta and your baby. Besides that, sleeping on your left side also keeps the uterus off the liver (which is on your abdomen’s right side). Also, be sure to keep your knees and legs bent while you sleep on your side – this will keep your heart from working overtime.

For extra comfort, you can try placing a thick pillow under your top leg. This will correctly align your body and relieve pressure from your bottom leg and lower back. You can also use pillows under your belly, between your legs, and behind your back.
