Yoga is a healthy practice to adopt during pregnancy. It helps mama-to-be to stay calm during the most important nine months. In addition to that, you’ll learn how to breathe deeply and consciously relax which comes in handy during labor and birth.
From physical to emotional state, practicing prenatal yoga leads to a healthy, happy and will make a positive difference during pregnancy. Some of the benefits of practicing yoga during pregnancy include:
1. Develop stamina and strength
More energy and strength is needed to be able to carry the weight as your baby grows. Yoga poses help to strengthen our hips, back, arms and shoulders.
2. Calms the nervous system
Through deep breathing, our nervous system comes to a state of relaxation. When our bodies are in the relax mode, our digestive systems operate properly. As a result, we tend to sleep better, and our immune system is at its optimal.
3. Relieves tension
As the baby grows, more stress is put upon the body. Especially the lower back curve due to the increased size of the belly. Not only that, the hips will get tighter due to the added pressure of baby’s weight in the belly. As the breasts increase in size, upper back and chest have more tension, along with the neck and shoulders. Prenatal yoga can help bring back flexibility and comfort to the groups of muscles and bone structures of your body.

Through stretching and toning muscles, you can help blood circulate throughout the body in a healthy way. And deep breathing practice in yoga can bring much-needed oxygen to your baby and to your own muscles.

Breathing is a very important part during delivery. It plays an important role in helping to relax the body and take your mind from the pain.
6. Connection with baby
Going to a prenatal yoga class once (or more) each week can act as a gentle reminder to take the time out of a busy work and also a way to bond with your growing baby. As your pregnancy progresses, your body’s different responses to yoga poses will be a reminder of other physical changes happening in your body. Through working with your breath and doing each pose, you become more aware of what is going on within.
7. Meeting other mothers-to-be
The social aspect of doing yoga is beneficial for mothers-to-be as it provides a safe, supportive space that caters to their specific pregnancy needs. You will meet other momma-to-be in the yoga class you signed up for. Having a strong support network in this crucial time is essential as you face the same challenges throughout the pregnancy as other mothers-to-be.
8. Preparation for labor and delivery
You are working with conscious breathing with each yoga pose. As you inhale, you acknowledge the tension that is felt. As you deeply exhale, you let go of it more and more with each breath. This allows expecting moms to practice being “comfortable with the uncomfortable” during time of labor.
