Being a first-time parent is daunting, more so if you’re the mom. Are you parenting the right way? Will you regret it if you do not do things a certain way? Are you missing out on any baby milestones? Are you caring about your baby more than yourself?
First, you have to take a deep breathe and stop panicking. Things will get easier as they go. But first, let us help relieve you of your worries by offering some tips as a first-time mom:
1. Worry about the weight later.
Weight gain during pregnancies are very normal, but too many moms rush to lose it. With so many new things to handle – your baby, your family, and yourself – you should cut yourself some slack and learn to prioritise. Focus on things that make you happy first rather than forcing yourself to lose weight.
2. Leave the house every day.
You need some alone time. Whether it’s 5 minutes or an hour, leave the house. Take a deep breathe. Take a stroll to the nearest park. Say hi to your neighbour. Do your groceries. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, the important thing is to leave the comfort of your house to keep yourself sane.
3. Take a lot of pictures.
With the ease of taking photos nowadays, there’s no excuse not to do it. Capture every single moment of your baby, no matter how mundane it is. Years down the road, you and your child will be grateful for the memories.
4. The days will crawl.
The adage “the days are long and the years are short” is absolutely true. As a first-time mom, you’ll be waiting for the day to pass, but it’ll crawl by. By the time the sun goes down, it would have already felt like a year. However, remember that there will come a day when you will be nostalgic of the moment.
5. Forgive yourself.
We are humans, and we make mistakes. Learn to not be so harsh on yourself, and know that forgiving yourself is a step to being a better mother.
