There are many untrue myths about twin pregnancies, some of which cause mothers to frantically panic as soon as they find out that they’re having twins. The fascination with twins have also fueled many untruths.
Here we debunk some of the most common myths:
1. Twins skip a generation.
This is simply not true. Although a pattern could emerge in your family, it is all pure luck. The odds of having twins is the same for every woman.
2. Dairy foods will help in conceiving twins.
Having a diet high in dairy foods, milk, and meat is supposed to help, especially at the time of ovulation. However, there has been no scientific evidence to support this.
3. Alternative therapies increase the likelihood of conceiving twins.
It has been said that acupuncture, naturopathy, aromatherapy, chiropractic or flower essences increase the likelihood of having twins. Like above, there is no scientific evidence to back this up.
4. You can’t breastfeed.
Mothers are sometimes told that their bodies won’t be able to keep up with the demand of feeding 2 babies at the same time. This is simply untrue, as your body will produce enough milk to feed your twins.
5. You have to undergo c-section.
Not all twins have to be delivered via c-section. C-sections are usually the safer option, but natural childbirth is a possibility, as long as the conditions are favorable for the babies and mother.
6. You can only detect them via ultrasounds.
Not really. As mentioned in our previous post, there are multiple ways to detect a twin pregnancies, some of which are extremely obvious. However, an ultrasound is the most accurate way to go.
7. ALL pregnancies begin with twins.
There’s always this misconception that all pregnancies begin with twins, with one of the embryo failing to survive. Although some pregnancies do indeed begin that way – which is known as the vanishing twin syndrome – not all pregnancies are conceived that way.
8. Twin pregnancies are result of fertility treatments.
If you want twins, fertility treatments are not the only way to go. In case you didn’t know, majority of twins are conceived naturally. There are also many ways to boost your chances of having twins.
