By cleaning your baby’s tongue on regular basis, it maintains baby’s oral health and hygiene. This is also to reduce the risk of infections caused by fungus, bacteria or germs. Tongue related issue like mouth thrush is very common in newborns. This is because the immune system of newborns is not developed completely and so the resistance to infections is low. Make cleaning a baby’s mouth and tongue thoroughly after feedings a regular habit.

How to clean your baby’s tongue

Get some soft cotton cloth. Make sure your hands are clean. Wash them thoroughly with soap before you clean your baby’s tongue. Take a piece of cotton cloth and soak the edge in lukewarm drinking water. Wrap it around your finger and gently put your fingers inside your baby’s mouth. Wipe both the upper and lower gum.

Alternatively, you can use a sterilized baby ear bud, and dip it in a glass of lukewarm drinking water. Now, gently roll it on your baby’s tongue. Wipe the upper and then the lower gum. Be sure that you do not insert it deep in the mouth. Also, be sure to have a tight grip on the ear bud.

Another way to clean your baby’s tongue is by using a gum cleaner. However, avoid using fluoridated items as baby can ingest it. You can also use an infant’s soft bristled, moistened toothbrush. However, this toothbrush should not be used to clean a newborn’s tongue.
