Putting your baby to sleep can run you into the ground sometimes, especially with newborns. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Because this is not something that can happen overnight – it’s a process that takes place over time. Start establishing healthy sleep habits for your baby. Although there is no shortcut to this, here are some tips to help you feel more rested.

1. Avoid eye contact
The last thing you want to do right before bed is to excite your baby. So, turn away your eyes when you’re putting him to sleep or calming her when she wakes.
2. White noise
Don’t give your baby the silent treatment! In utero, she was used to constant sounds, like beating heart and noisy stomach, so silence might be startling for her.
As odd as it may sounds, white noise such as detuned radio, vacuum or a white noise app can also help a baby to fall asleep. Some babies sleep easier if you turn on a white noise machine or a fan. This way if the baby wakes in the middle of the night they won’t be alarmed by where they are and startle to full wakefulness.
A pacifier is every baby’s best friend. It helps your baby to fall asleep. Also, some studies have shown that babies who use pacifiers at bedtime and nap time have a lower risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
Remember to remove the pacifier from his mouth when he is sound asleep so he doesn’t wake up if it falls out.
4. A sleep toy
Having a sleep toy can help to calm your baby and feel secured. Let her hold it through the night and to gradually associate her sleep toy with bedtime. But do make sure that the toy is not choking hazard for your baby.
5. Bedtime bath
A bedtime bath helps your baby relax and get into sleep mode. If the weather permits, make it an everyday routine and give her a nice relaxing bath in warm water. Massage her and stop all play activities everytime after the bath. Put her straight to bed in order for her to associate night bath with sleep time.
6. Set a routine
It will be highly beneficial for your baby to form a routine, even as young as two to three months of age. A consistent night time routines help your baby understand that it’s time to sleep. Consistency is the key.
In the beginning, he may still seems to be in a playful mood and not following the pattern, but give it some time. Put him in bed and do all the sleep related activities at the same time each day. By doing this this consistently, this will establish a routine for your baby.
7. Lay your baby down awake
Lay your baby down in the cot on her back. They must be aware that they are in their own cot if they are to learn to sleep through the night.
Put her down in their cot slightly awake so that they are used to settling themselves. Don’t make it a habit to rock your baby to sleep.
8. Lights out
To help your little ones to learn and understand when it’s bedtime, always keep the room dark. Try using dark curtains or blackout shades to simulate night time during the day.
When it’s time for her to wake up, whether in the morning or after a nap, simply open the curtains and let light in to help her to know the difference.
9. Overnight diapers
Wet diapers can be bothersome and at times will wake your baby up in the middle of the night. If she sleeps through a wet diaper (bowel movements should be changed immediately), and you’re not treating a diaper rash, then don’t wake her. Super-absorbent overnight diapers, along with an application of diaper cream for skin protection will keep her comfortable and asleep through the night.
10. Soothing activities just before bedtime
When you put your baby to at night, try putting your hand gently on her stomach, arms and head to comfort and soothe her. Patting her back while singing a favorite or rhyme and giving a massage will also help calm her and to sleep through the night,
